NOVEMBER 2020 WORKSHOP

November 2020 Workshop Write-up by George Eadie

Workshop – A Negative Floral

On November 21 and 22 with snow gently falling outside and coffee in hand TWS Workshop Instructor Nancy Newman and 15 attentive students got busy with water, brushes and pigment. The topic was negative painting techniques and the subject was florals. These techniques could have been applied to any number of subjects.

It’s great to meet and paint in person, but our Zoom workshop was surprisingly intimate and interactive and we didn’t have to drive in the snow. Everyone could see clearly, close up, what the instructor was doing without crowding around. Students could ask questions, show their work and get advice as they would do in person. In this workshop the chatter among old and new friends was positive and heartwarming and every painter was focused and brave.

Negative painting combines many of the elements that make watercolour painting addictive: transparency, luminosity, hard edge, soft edge, fading, depth. As well as making the most of the magical, sometimes hairy, surprises that watercolour throws at you on the fly.

Looking at the beautiful, mind-bending pieces that every one of the students produced gave me goosebumps. Here is a taste.
